A Little Garden Work

A couple of years back, Jankie and Meriam asked if we would consider planting a garden.  They live in a village outside of Polokwane and do not have running water at their houses and the community tap is only turned on every now and then so there is no way for them to take care of a garden at home.

For a few reasons we are just now starting to tackle a garden:  1. time  and 2. we don't have a clue about a garden (other than Mark's dad has always had a great garden and I remember going next door when I was young to pick a carrot and eat it with the green leaves still on it!)

Well, we are home for awhile now and grocery prices are rising AGAIN, so now is the time.  We have planted a few things and we are waiting to see the little sprouts starting!

starting with our seedling area first

We decided to use some old bricks we had laying around and make a path so we wouldn't have to worry about the mud.  I forgot to take a picture of the finished product.  Oh well.

We are so excited to have Jankie back at the house, I shared in a post last month ...

Two months ago, we got a call from Jankie telling us that he was offered a full time job working at tea plantation that was re-opening.  We were so sad to see him leave but we understand the need he has to have full time work which we just can't provide financially.  Long story short, he called last week to see he could have his old job.  He said that he never should have left.  The people who hired him along with around 500 others, were told to stop working after 22 days.  They were told the project was never funded and they could not pay them for the work they had done.  So he was stranded there with no money and waiting.  Finally, he hitch hiked back to his village and contacted us.  We were very happy for him to come back.   We are praying that the Lord will provide work for him the other 3 days during the week.

Well, since then the Lord has provided work for him on Wednesday and Saturday with two different neighbors.  The week before we went to Mozambique, Jankie stayed at the house with us.  That Wednesday he went to bible study with us at Pastor Johann's house.  He enjoyed it so much.  This past Wednesday he stayed the night again and he decided to go to Pastor Andrew's bible study.  (Both Andrew and Johann each live down the street from us).  Jankie has expressed a desire to stay with us each Wednesday so he can attend a bible study.

Wednesday, while Jankie was working on the beds for the garden, he told me he had read in 1 Corinthians about Prophets.  He wanted to talk to Mark about it.  He told me that he wants to learn about the truth and understand it before he can go and tell others in his village.  Mark spent over an hour out back with him discussing things from God's Word.

Mark wrote a little recap for me ...  "I had a wonderful conversation with Jankie when he had some questions about tongues and prophecy that Paul wrote about in 1 Corinthians 14.  I was able to pull up some reading material from CARM.org and Bible.org over the matter so he could read it himself.  Jankie was plowing a new vegetable garden for Alicia when I joined him to talk to him about tongues and prophecy.  I took him back to 1 Corinthians 12 and took him through the 14th chapter.  By God's grace and spiritual gift, we able to dive into God's Word which revealed that Prophecy is not a fortune telling gift and is not like the Old Testament Prophets (Hebrews 1), but it is a gift in which reveals the Old Testament prophecies that revealed Christ's coming and is explained in the New Testament.  In short, it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  How wonderful it is to possess this gift so that the Body of Christ will be built up and edified, whereas speaking in tongues is useless unless an interpreted as the Gospel is being presented to listeners.  Scripture clearly says that speaking in a tongue that is not recognizable is nothing more than drawing attention to yourself and is nothing more than speaking gibberish into the air. Jankie and I also found in the Bible we need to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts.  To desire spiritual gifts and achieve them means that you gain more knowledge about God and that you increase in sanctification"

I can't wait to report back to you the progress of our garden but most of all I can't wait to share more with you on what the Lord is doing in Jankie's life.
